iOS 11 Guide – Apple has just announced iOS 11 alongside other updates on tvOS, macOS, and watchOS at the 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose, California. The new iOS update brings hundreds of new features to iPhone and iPad.

Among the new features of the new iOS are the new AR (Augmented reality) experiences, the ability to pay friends using Apple Pay, more ways to use Apple Pencil, Do Not Disturb while driving, more intelligence Siri with new voice and new professional capabilities to Photos and Camera.

Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, said “With iOS 11, we’re delivering the biggest AR platform in the world, and it’s available today for developers to begin building AR experiences using ARKit for hundreds of millions of iPhone and iPad users,” He also added “iOS 11 gives iPad users the powerful app functionality they need to take advantage of everything iPad is capable of, and brings hundreds of new features and incredible updates to the iOS apps iPhone and iPad users enjoy every day.”

The new iOS update is currently available for developers to download via developer.apple.com. As for the public beta of iOS 11 will be available later this month at beta.apple.com. The new iOS will be officially released for iOS users in the fall.

iOS 11 Compatible Devices

These are the lists of iOS 11 compatible devices:

  1. iPhone 5s and later
  2. All iPad Airs
  3. All iPad Pros
  4. The iPad 5th generation
  5. The iPad mini 2 and later
  6. The iPod touch 6th generation

Please note that not all the mentioned devices above are available for person to person payments and Apple Pay Cash. These features will be available for:

  1. iPhone SE
  2. iPhone 6 and later
  3. iPad Pro
  4. iPad 5th generation
  5. iPad Air 2
  6. iPad mini 3
  7. Apple Watch

Users in the US will be available to enjoy the person payments and Apple Pay Cash features this fall.

A. Better iPad

The iOS 11 brings new updates on iPad with the new customizable Dock. Users will be able to access it at any time and within any app simply by swiping upwards on the iPad’s display. The dock will allow users to easily access multitasking functionality like Split View and Slide Over.

The new iOS also brings a new Files app which allows users to access files anywhere they store them like in iCloud Drive,Box, or Dropbox. The iOS 11 also offers drag and drop system which make it easier to drag images, text, links, and more from one app to another, or even between documents.

B. More Apple Pencil Support

The Apple Pencil will have support for inline drawing. There will also be a new Instant Notes feature opens Notes from the Lock Screen. All you have to do is just tap the Apple Pencil on the display and that’s it.

C. Siri with New Voice, New Visual Interface and New Translate Feature

Siri offers new and more natural voice with both male and female options are available. The new Siri translate feature can translate English words into Chinese, French, German, Italian, and Spanish with more languages in the months to come. The iOS 11 also brings Siri with a new visual interface that surfaces multiple results on requests plus follow up questions.

Siri in iOS 11 also become more predictive across different iOS apps. The iOS personal assistant also has more SiriKit support which allows users to use more third-party services via Siri like Evernote.  Apple in its iOS 11 informational page wrote “Siri extends beyond voice, using on-device learning to deliver more personal experiences and offers suggestions based on personal usage of Safari, News, Mail, Messages and more. For example, as Siri learns topics or places a user is interested in while browsing Safari, they will be suggested when typing in Mail, Messages and other apps”.

D. AR Experiences for iPhone and iPad

This year, Apple finally unveiled ARKit, a new developer platform for creating iOS apps with high-quality AR experiences. It takes advantage of the processors and motion sensors in iOS devices to build virtual content.

E. New Professional Camera and Photos Features

The iOS 11 brings more professional camera and photos features. Now users can take Portrait Mode images with optical image stabilization, True Tone flash and HDR, for more professional look.  Live Photos will be much better with new Loop and Bounce effects.

The new iOS brings a new technology called High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) that reduces the file size of every photo taken with iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Memory movies in Photos are optimized to play in both portrait and landscape orientation.

F. Apple Pay Cash feature

The iOS 11 arrives with Apple Pay Cash feature which allows users to pay friends or family with Apple Pay. So, sending money or getting paid is now easier and securer with Apple Pay. Users can do the payment in Messages or simply by telling Siri to pay someone, using the credit and debit cards they already have in Wallet.

When you receive your payment, you will receive the money in your new Apple Pay Cash account. Don’t worry, you can directly use the money to make purchases using Apple Pay in stores, apps and on the web. You can also directly use it to send money to your family or friends. Furthermore, you can transfer it from Apple Pay Cash to your bank account.

G. Do Not Disturb While Driving

To help you drive safely, the iOS 11 arrives with new Do Not Disturb while driving feature. It helps drivers stay more focused on the road. Your iPhone will detect when you may be driving and will  automatically silence notifications to keep the screen dark.

Don’t worry you can still manage it. Besides, you will be able to send an auto reply to contacts listed in your Favorites to let them know that you are driving.

Apple officially revealed the iOS 11 at its Worldwide Developers Conference event in San Jose, California.
